Step 4 Attend Your Field Session

Final Step - Attend Field Session

Where & When Is it?

The Final Step in your Certification as a new referee is to attend a field session with a licensed instructor.  When you sign up for your class, the location and date of the field session is listed on the main course details page.  This info is on the top of the course description in a section labeled meetings.  It will list the address and time for the field session for this particular course.

What Is it?

  What to expect:

Your field session is a 5 hour course in how to be a referee. Instructors will cover as many things as possible to make sure you are prepared for your first step onto the pitch.

Topics will include:

  • Uniform and equipment
  • Pregame and team checkin
  • Communicating with coaches and players
  • Positioning and movement as an A/R
  • Positioning and movement as a Center Referee
  • Whistle work
  • Signaling and communicating as a referee crew
  • Offside and how to be positioned and prepared

The field session is a physical session on a pitch or court. Dress appropriately for physical activity. There will be breaks and time to discuss and break down the topics, but expect to work and move. Good refereeing is all about positioning and being in the right position.

What to bring:

  • Good athletic shoes
  • Proper clothes for movement and exercise
  • Water bottle
  • Any referee equipment you might have (whistle, flags, etc.)

Do not worry if you do not have equipment yet, as instructors will have equipment for you to use at the field session.  If you do have equipment already, please bring it so that the Instructor can go over it with you , and you can practice in the session with the equipment you will be using on the pitch.
